Bi-Directional Closed Suction Catheter (Bi-Di CathTM)
Instructions for Use
Bi-Di Cath has a manual OPEN-CLOSED stopcock type valve that replaces the standard thumb-controlled button valve. It’s made to facilitate the Bi-Directional method of suction-during-insertion and withdrawal. The Bi-Directional method is performed by having the suction ON while inserting the catheter into the ET Tube and ON while withdrawing the catheter. The Bi-Di Cath stopcock style valve gives you two free hands for inserting the catheter with the suction on.
How to Perform Bi-Directional Suction
Open the valve to suction and verify that the ventilator maintains PEEP. With the ventilator maintaining PEEP and the suction on, proceed to suctioning during insertion and withdrawal. Use your unit’s method for catheter insertion depth and flushing when complete.
Our research model shows that Bi-Directional Suction with Bi-Di Cath extracts more secretions while causing significantly less negative pressure in the lungs than the suction-during-withdrawal method, as long as the ventilator maintains PEEP or CPAP.
